Methodology: Media violence on Children

For my secondary research, I went to two different websites to investigate about media violence on children and the short and long term effects it can have on them, depending on what is shown to them on Television. In addition to my research, the first website I visited was the ‘Independent’ website, which spoke more about the impact that media violence has on children, especially boys. The second website I visited was ‘the guardian’ which gave more facts and statistics than the first website. To make sure I got the correct research, I went to these two websites run by professionals and experts in order to get the accurate and truthful information. An advantage that I had with getting my secondary research was that ‘media violence on children’ was a popular talked about subject on the net which meant that experts and professionals would have written about their research and findings to it and it then made it easier for me to collect the data and compare them together. A Disadvantage that I had with my research was that some sites were over a decade old, which meant that some of the information in it would not be very effective in talking about the effect media violence has on today’s kids. Also the majority of websites that I found were from the US, which made it quite difficult to analyse and compare it with data from the UK because it wasn’t quite as effective and the majority of the information was very different.

To conduct my primary research, which will tie in with the information I researched for my Secondary, I will regulate a survey on Survey monkey and on Twitter where I would ask at least 10-15 questions based on media violence on children from ages 6-12. The survey would be mostly aimed at Parents to answer questions on how they think media violence on Television impacts their children and if they see any effects to the things they watch and the video games they play. The reason why I am directing the Survey to the Parents instead of the children, is because they wouldn’t be able to properly it well and give a full detailed explanation on whether they are affected by what they see on Television, and with that it would fail to give me a good Primary research which I will need to compare with my Secondary. My aim is to sample at least 40 people and make the questions long and detailed, so with their answers it can provide me good and thorough research and with that I will be able to compare it with my secondary research and see if some of the Primary research I collected is false and not entirely correct. It would then allow me to go back and make some important changes if needed. I believe that a survey is the best Primary research tool to use because it provides a more accurate sample which would help me gather my results and draw a conclusion. Also, surveys conducted anonymously offers an avenue for more honest responses than other types of research methods.

Evaluation on Millennials Presentation

As a group, we split ourselves up into two and researched both Primary and Secondary research on Millennials. For our primary research we organised surveys through Survey monkey and Twitter. It was very important that we conducted both these surveys because it helped us to gather valuable data and information which helped us to analyse and compare our research and also refer it back to our hypothesis to see if it properly and efficiently answered the question relating to sub-culture. For our secondary research, we looked and investigated factual and academic research to bring together and create our Presentation.

To find out more about the term ‘Sub-culture’ and how it involves Millennials, I went and watched an 80's ‘KISS’ video for my primary research and came to a conclusion on our hypothesis that sub-culture has always been around ever since the Gen X generation. I found out through extensive research that they didn’t depict on Social media to find their identity for them since social media didn’t exist back then, but found their sub-cultures through their friends, fashion and music. With this information I related it back to Millennials today and discussed it with my group and we came to an assumption that even though there are hardly any sub-culture groups today, it had always been there.

One of the main things that went well in our primary research was that the number people who completed our survey was 36. With that large number it was easier to collect our Secondary data and analyse it in order to come to a conclusion on how Millennials view themselves today. However, even though we collected a large data of 36 people, we failed to ask Millennials in their middle 20's-30's, which meant that some of the Primary research we collected was bias and wasn’t as efficient and effective. We also learnt that it was better to complete the Secondary research first so that in future we don’t have to make any changes if the primary research is false or incorrect.

Lastly, in our presentation we included things such as quoted and statistics which are good secondary research tools, and with that we used it to back our extensive Secondary research and found it to be more reliable. We found and included a quote from Ron Alsop in his 2008 book ‘Trophy kids’ where he discussed about young people being rewarded for minimal accomplishment and having unrealistic expectations of working life. This quote was very important because it then lead us to analyse our research we found about Millennials being lazy and narcissist. Ultimately, we worked well as a team and collected valuable information in which we discussed thoroughly about, making sure to always refer back to our Hypothesis in order to come to a conclusion about our research.
